Year Round Racing

Sarasota Youth Sailing’s Year Round Racing Program runs during the school year. Sailors as young as eight who have completed Opti Level 2 or an equivalent are welcome to join the team. The seasons run from late August to mid December and mid January to mid May. We typically compete in one regatta a month both locally and statewide. Some fleets will have an option to travel out of state regattas. For more information on the individual fleets please see below.

Pre-requisite – Opti 2 or Sailing Director Approval

This two day clinic will help the sailors get an understanding of what been on the Opti Green Race Fleet Team would be like.  Sailors work on boat control, boat speed, maneuvering and sailing around a course. They practice all the points of sail by tacking, jibing, and rounding marks. Sailors learn more about rules of the road and are introduced to racing, learning how to start and complete a race.

High School Sailing Intro Clinic
Pre-requisite – Rising 9th-12th grader

This two day clinic will focus on high school style sailing.  Sailors will sail 420s and learn more about skipper and crew responsibilities while also learning how to race.  Sailors will practice drills that are typically completed at high school sailing practice.

Year Round Racing Levels

Optimist Green

Cost: $425/season + $150 boat charter fee.

Pre-Requisite: Completion of Level 2 Optimist or Program Director’s Approval

Practice Times: Saturdays – Rigged and Ready by 10:00 AM and class until 4:00 PM, lunch on the water.

Session Dates: Fall: August 26-December 9

Green Fleet Racing builds on the skills learned in the Level 2 Optimist class to improve boat handling as well as introducing sailors to the application of the Optimist Dinghy in a racing environment. Sailors work on boat control, developing boat speed, maneuvering, and sailing around a course. They practice all the points of sail by tacking, jibing, and rounding marks. As the class progresses, sailors learn more about rules of the road and are introduced to racing, learning how to start and complete a race.

Sailors receive on-shore chalk talks in preparation for on-the-water drills. As sailor’s skill levels develop, sailors may be encouraged to participate in area regattas. Here the sailors work on sail trim, boat speed, tactics, rules, and strategy under actual racing conditions. Sailors will also be videotaped to show how to improve their technique.

While the main focus of Green Fleet is racing, there is also a healthy component of fun involved with a strong emphasis on team building an sportsmanship. Monthly regattas are available (minimum of 3 attendees required) but not mandatory for all Green Fleet sailors. Some sailors choose to attend all events, others only choose to attend one or two over the course of the year.

Optimist Red White & Blue

Cost: $675. $25/day regatta fee applies to most sponsored regattas, additional fees required for out of state events and Orange Bowl.

Pre-Requisite: Optimist Green Racing and/or Program Director’s Approval. Private boat ownership required.

Practice Times: Saturdays – 10:00- 4:00 PM, Sundays 1-4pm

Session Dates: Fall: August 26 – December 9

Optimist Red, White and Blue (RWB) racing is for those students who are interested in the highest level of competition. This curriculum is geared towards improving racing tactics, boat handling, and knowledge of the rules. Sailors receive intensive, individual coaching and also learn to work together as a team. On-land chalk talks and on-the-water drills are a regular part of instruction. Sailors will be video taped on the water during practice with follow-up on land with their coach and teammates. Private boat ownership is required and sailors at the RWB level are provided the opportunity to compete in monthly regional (minimum of 4 attendees required) and national regattas.

O'pen Bics

Cost: $350/season + $100 boat charter fee.

Pre-Requisite: Sailors must have completed at least one year of Green Fleet.

Practice Times: Saturdays – 12:00 PM until 4:00 PM.

Session Dates: Fall: August 26-December 9

New this year the O’Pen Bic Racing Team will balance fun and racing. During practice, the team will continue to work on the basics of sailing and racing while also exploring the bay and having fun. Sailors work on boat control, developing boat speed, maneuvering, and sailing around a course. They practice all the points of sail by tacking, jibing, and rounding marks. They also learn some Bic specific racing strategies such as dry capsizing and standing while racing.

The team will be encouraged to participate in local regattas.

Club 420 Racing

Cost: $675/season + $175 boat charter fee + $100 refundable loss and damage deposit. $25/day regatta fee applies to most sponsored regattas, additional fees required for out of state events and Orange Bowl.

Pre-Requisite: Level 1 420, one session of After school program or invitation by Program Director

Practice Times: Wednesdays Rigged and Ready 4:00 PM-7:00 PM or dark, Saturdays 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM.

Session Dates: Fall: August 26 – December 9

The C420 Racing Program provides sailors the opportunity to develop teamwork skills while competing at the highest level. Building on the skills learned in other racing classes, 420 sailors work on improving their sail trim and boat speed while working on the best ways to make the boat move in different conditions. Sailors receive on-shore chalk talks in preparation for on-the-water drills and coaches consistently use videotape to to show how to improve technique.

An additional charter fee is required for all sailors to be able to sail as part of the 420 team. Sailors are expected to maintain the YSP equipment as if it were their own and return boats in the same condition, minus regular wear and tear, that they received them.

Team members participate in events throughout Florida on a monthly basis with the opportunity to travel Nationally and Internationally throughout the summer months.

Laser Racing

Cost: $675. $25/day regatta fee applies to most sponsored regattas.

Pre-Requisite: Private ownership of Laser

Practice Times: *Wednesdays* Rigged and Ready 4:00 PM-7:30 PM or dark, Saturdays Workout 10:00-10:30, Rigged and Ready 10:45 AM-4:00 PM

Session Dates: Fall : August 26 – December 9

The Laser Racing Program gives sailors using all three different size Laser sails (Full Rig, Radial and 4.7) instruction in tactics, boat handling and proper sail trim. Building on the skills learned in other racing classes, laser sailors work on improving their sail trim and boat speed while working on the best ways to make the boat move in different conditions. Sailors receive on-shore chalk talks in preparation for on-the-water drills and coaches consistently use videotape to to show how to improve technique.

Team members participate in events throughout Florida on a monthly basis (minimum of 3 attendees)

Private boat ownership is REQUIRED for the team and if a sailor decides to travel to events parental support is mandatory.

High School Racing

Cost: $425/season for 9-12 graders.  If enrolled in another SYS race team then the program fee is $200/season.  New this year is an 8th grade sailing only option for $175.  This is only open to 8th graders and they can only attend practices during daylight savings.

Pre-Requisite: Enrollment in 8th grade or higher at any area high school (no prior team affiliation required)

Practice Times: Tuesdays Rigged and Ready 3:30 PM-7:00 PM (or dark when daylight allows). Fall practice starts September 5.

The Sarasota Youth Sailing High School Sailing Program is for sailors in grades 8-12 who want to sharpen their sailing skills through the fall, winter, & spring. Throughout the school year, participants in the program attend regular practices at SYS and several weekend regattas around the state.

The SYS High School Program consists of five local high school teams with other sailors constituting partial teams. Each complete team has a parent coordinator to manage communication and logistics for regatta and practice attendance.

The following schools are currently involved in the program. Sarasota High, Manatee High, Out of Door Acaemy, Pine View and Riverview.

Multihulls

Cost: $675 + $275 boat charter + $300 refundable damage deposit. There will be a $25/day per sailor regatta fee for all regattas not at SYS

Current Laser , 420 and High School team sailors receive a practice discount – $400 practice fee per session, $275 boat charter and $300 refundable damage deposit

Prerequisite: Coach and Director Approval

Practice Times: Thursdays: 4:00 pm-7:00pm / Sundays: 11am-4:00 pm

Session Dates: Fall : August 27 – December 10

All sailors interested in being on the Multihull team must fill out an application. You must also be active in another race team at SYS(Lasers, 420s or High School). We encourage the use of the Multihulls and think the best way to improve is time on the water; however, safety is the number one concern. Director and Coach approval must be given when using the multihull sailboats without coach support.

SARASOTA YOUTH SAILING PROGRAM – CODE OF CONDUCT

Please be aware that all SYS sailors shall wear US Coast Guard approved Life Jackets at all times while participating in SYS sanctioned practices and regattas.

The goal of Sarasota Youth Sailing, Inc.(SYS) is to provide a safe and educational environment for all participants. It is of utmost importance that all sailors and their parents be aware of the standards expected regarding behavior both on and off the water.

Sarasota Youth Sailing wishes to promote mutual respect amongst its sailors, coaches, parents, volunteers, and guests through the use of appropriate language, attitude, and behavior.

All participants, including parents and youths of Sarasota Youth Sailing, agree that:

Safety is the top priority.

  • I will demonstrate mutual respect for all sailors, coaches, parents, and volunteers regardless of age, race, gender, religion, national origin or abilities.
  • I will represent SYS with my best efforts, never bringing embarrassment or an unfavorable view to the program.
  • I will respect all equipment and property. I will take personal and financial responsibility for any damage I incur. Parents will take joint responsibility for damage caused by their children.
  • I will respect the Gulf of Mexico, Sarasota Bay, their shores and the creatures that make them their home.
  • I will not verbally and/or physically threaten or abuse any other person.
  • I will refrain from smoking, drinking and/or illegal drug use.
  • I will not bring any weapons to any SYS practice or event.
  • I will continually strive to demonstrate good sportsmanship on and off the water. I will follow the fundamental rules of fair sailing.
  • I will not use any social media website or tool to mock, belittle or abuse any sailor, coach or anyone else associated with SYS.
